The company is now seeking to supply even lower-cost products through a large measure of substitution for the stainless steel components - by using high-performance coatings on normal steel surfaces. This must not however have any adverse effect on the functionality of the structures or their resistance to corrosive attack. In other words the coating systems used must ensure outstanding protection against corrosion in sometimes aggressive waste water, plus improved resistance to abrasion, waste water and chemicals. Conventional coatings soon proved unequal to the task.
The new CORRPASSIV® systems are eminently suitable for this task. Internal laboratory tests and external practical tests over a two-year period have shown that the required properties can be achieved by applying a CORRPASSIV® primer (20 µm) and a wear-resistant two-component epoxy top coat prescribed by the manufacturer. The components treated in this way are fully comparable with the stainless steel parts as regards corrosion behaviour, but offer a considerable additional cost advantage.
The company is now using normal steel coated with the CORRPASSIV® system described above for all hydraulic cylinders in its new weir systems, and is currently conducting further practical tests to investigate what other stainless steel components can be replaced in the same way.
