As a result of exposure to the coastal climate at the Brunsbüttel terminal on the Elbe estuary, the crude oil pipeline (Photo 1) of the DEA refinery (DEA Mineralöl AG Erdölwerke Holstein) is continually suffering from corrosion, especially in the vicinity of the welded joints. To protect the surface against mineral oils and seawater, the pipelines are regularly inspected for damage due to rust. Any damaged sites are then refurbished by sandblasting them and applying a coating system consisting of anticorrosion primer, intermediate and top coat.

With the aim of preventing rust formation on a long-term basis, a CORRPASSIV® system has now been used for the first time in the repair work on the pipeline.
The corroded sites were fully derusted by sandblasting with blast-furnace grit in accordance with the SA 2 ½ standard. Then the derusted sites were first given a coat of CORRPASSIV® Primer to ennoble and passivate the surface.
After a drying time of 3 hours an intermediate layer of two-component epoxy coating was applied in a film thickness of 240 µm. After a curing time of several days, this was followed by a an 80 µm film of top coat consisting of a two-component polyamide-hardened epoxy material pigmented with micaceous iron ore.
The structure of the CORRPASSIV® 4906 system has been developed for use in heavy-exposure situations such as steel and hydraulic construction, port installations, refineries, bridges, pipelines or containers.
The work was carried out in July 1997 by KorroService, Korrosionsschutz- und Reinigungsservice Brunsbüttel GmbH & Co. KG, a corrosion control and cleaning service.
