The Cyprus-based Hanseatic Shipping Company (HSC) operates a large number of container vessels all over the world. HSCs activities also include the maintenance and refurbishing of these vessels on their own shipyard. Since the beginning of 1997 some of these jobs have been carried out exclusively with Skippers CORRPASSIV®.
The new system is currently being used for refurbishing high-moisture areas inside and outside the vessel which are subject to considerable attack by sea water. In some cases application is made difficult by the geometry of these areas, with niches which are not readily accessible.
To avoid sandblasting the surfaces and allow the necessary derusting of damage sites to be carried out quickly and inexpensively, the company also uses another Ormecon Chemie product: CORREPAIR®.
Since the coating itself is built up using the Skippers CORRPASSIV® system, only the CORREPAIR® 1 component is used to remove the corrosion products. A chemical reaction converts the rust into a water-soluble form, enabling it to be removed quickly and easily - even from less accessible places.
This treatment of the corroded metal surface is followed by a coat of Skippers CORRPASSIV® BASE- PRIMER (20 µm) and then a coat of Skippers CORRPASSIV® INTER-PRIMER (100 µm).
The system is rounded off by a 70 µm film of a PUR - top coat made by Messrs. JOTUN which is widely used by the Hanseatic Shipping Company.
The new system is currently being subjected to practical conditions in two 142 m-long container vessels, the Nuova Asia and the Nuova Adria. The vessels are being progressively refurbished during short harbor stops.
Maintenance and refurbishing of the vessels is very cost and time intensive and can hardly be done by the crew members on board. HSC aims to significantly prolong repairing cycles and therefore the life of the vessels by using CORREPAIR® / CORRPASSIV®.
Tank vent heads:
There are 40 - 50 vent heads all over the main deck belonging to ballast water-, fuel oil- and lube oil tanks. The corrosion to the vent heads, particularly inside, is hard to control unless the parts are being disassembled and painted every 3 -4 years.

Refurbishing is done step by step after dismantling:

Mooring and anchor winches:
There are 6 such winches onboard with similar corrosion problems to the motor casing and the ventilation boxes. They are all exposed to the elements and extremely suffering from sea water.
