Test Report No 2 |
Ageing tests on test plates with different coatings started in autumn 1996 at the level of the waterline on the quay wall of Njaršvik harbour (mean water level between high and low tide). This zone is constantly subject to wet, damp, spray or dry conditions depending on the tide and weather conditions.
In this test a commercially available standard system for coating ships is compared with Skippers CORRPASSIV® .
The standard system was applied with a recommended dry film thickness of 320 µm and consists of a two-component epoxy primer and a two-component epoxy top coat.
The Skippers CORRPASSIV® system comprises the CORRPASSIV® Primer (20 µm), a two-component epoxy intermediate coat and a two-component polyurethane top coat, and with a total of only 180 µm achieves a marked reduction in dry film thickness.

Both sides of the sample exhibit substantial blistering along the injury site after only 8 months of the ageing test.
The Skippers CORRPASSIV® system is unaffected by the duration of exposure. Neither the injury nor the undamaged surface show any alteration:

In this result, special mention must be made of the fact that the total film thickness of the CORRPASSIV® system, at 180 µm, is generally considered too thin for such applications. Despite a 44% reduction in film thickness compared with the standard system, much more efficient corrosion protection is achieved with CORRPASSIV®.
