Application: Schwarze Pumpe: High Technology also in corrosion protection / Organic Metal protecting biological filters

CORRPASSIV® 4900 in an inside and outside application of a big organic filtration plant for biological treatment of waste air and water

One of the world's most modern power stations, including waste processing and methanol producing plants, is actually built on a big industrial site south of Cottbus - where oil refineries, oil processing plants and a brown coal power plant were located in former GDR times.

Household waste is dried and pelletized in a special processing plant which is part of the new system. The pellets are either used for burning in power station processes or for smoldering in a high tech plant for methanol production. Producing methanol has been based on smoldering of sewage sludge and old plastics for years. It is a versatile chemical material that will soon be used for operating fuel cells in future electric drives. Certainly this is one of the most effective ways - regarding energetic, economical and ecological aspects - to treat household waste and put it to a proper use.

Waste air and water, resulting from drying processes, are pretreated in a biological plant and then cleaned in organic filter modules.

Organic filters usually demand extremely efficient corrosion protection. Almost 100 % humidity and tropical heat, in combination with a high concentration of aggressive organic acids and comparable compouds, always result in a failure of almost every coating. Therefore especially the interior coating is an extremely critical term of reference. Only with CORRPASSIV® a warranty of several years could be offered to the operating company under acceptable economical conditions.

After successful pretests, CORRPASSIV® 4900 was used for „Schwarze Pumpe", with a dry film thickness of 20 µm for the Primer and 220 µm for the Topcoat. A UV-resistant exterior coating was renounced on customer's demand.

Due to the ennobling and passivating properties of the Organic Metal, as well as the extremely low delamination speed, this system can stand heavy corrosion attacks, even if applied in such small dry film thickness. It is suitable for heavy corrosion protection and able to resist aggressive organic acids under tropical conditions - as in the application of „Schwarze Pumpe".

The power plant was put into operation in June 1998.
