Press Release - Covion acquires Ormecons electronic grade Polyaniline technology:
COVION ADDS PANI LICENCE TO OLED/ETFD MATERIALS PORTFOLIO:
Covion Organic Semiconductors GmbH has acquired exclusive manufacture and selling rights for Ormecon Chemies electronic grade polyaniline (PANI) conductive polymer technology. Under a three-year agreement, Covion will lead commercial development, manufacture and distribution of PANI for electronic thin film devices (ETFD) and organic and polymeric light emitting devices (OLED and PLED) applications. The technology acquired comprises synthesis and dispersion.
The electronic grade of Polyaniline is a water-based dispersion, with controllable conductivity and fine colloidal particle size enabling outstanding performance as a buffer and hole injection layer for OLED applications. The move by Covion further strengthens its market position as the leading large scale manufacturer in advanced materials for OLED and thin film electronics applications.
Already in pilot scale manufacture, PANI offers significantly improved electronic performance, longer reliable service life and easier device manufacture for OLEDs.
Specially designed for passive matrix devices, PANI can also be beneficial in active matrix applications, as it offers both high resistivity required for passive matrix and the high conductivity needed for active matrix devices.
Ormecon Chemie is one of the recognised market leaders in conductive polymers, with a product family built around the worlds first commercially available organic metal. Beyond the new agreement, a long-term R+D and manufacturing relationship is envisaged by both partners, to combine the expertise of Covion in organic LED and Ormecon in conductive polymers.
Covion Managing Director Dr. Hermann Schenk noted that the agreement with Ormecon emphasised the increasing breadth of Covions product portfolio. He said: "This is an exciting new technology to serve the rapidly-growing thin film electronics and OLED sector. Were delighted to be working with Ormecon Chemie and driving PANIs manufacture for this fast-developing sector".
Dr. Bernhard Wessling, Ormecons President and Managing Partner, said: "With their technology, proven manufacturing capacity and quality, Covion is the logical partner to work with us on the development and commercial scale-up of electronic grade PANI".
Notes for Editors:
Covion Organic Semiconductors
GmbH, based in Frankfurt, Germany, designs manufactures and markets high performance small
molecule and polymer materials for the OLED flat panel display and opto-electronic
markets. Covion forms the Displays materials segment in the Electronic Materials business
of joint venture partner Avecia.
Marking an industry-leading step into the full scale manufacture of high performance
conjugated polymers, Covion has recently (May) commissioned a US $5m. extension to its
Frankfurt OLED materials manufacturing facility - first operational in 1996.
The companys research and development focus includes advanced applications in
electronic circuitry, image recognition, advanced lighting, lasers and optical data
storage. Avecias partner in Covion is Axiva.
Ormecon Chemie is a subsidiary of the
privately owned Zipperling Kessler & Co, based
in Ammersbek , Germany, which brought polyaniline (PANI) Organic Metal technology to
commercial fruition in 1996, after two decades of research.
PANI is the core of a product family marketed under the ORMECON brand.
Successful PANI applications include provision of ultra-thin solderable finishes for printed
circuit boards; in corrosion prevention
and in transparent antistatic coatings. Among
new applications in development are
"intelligent" windows, transparent electrodes, solar and fuel cells. Ormecon is
marketing its Organic Metal technology via a broad network
of 23 distributors and sales partners in 18 countries including a Joint Venture in Japan, as well as several license agreements.
