Subject: Re: Polyaniline / Comments on pre-print versions of papers

I would urge Dr Wessling *not* to do this, as it will cause
significant confusion for future readers of JCSE, and is contrary to
the majority wishes of members of this list (in so far as members
have expressed an opinion).

JCSE is a Journal of Record, i.e. readers in the future are
guaranteed to be able to read a paper that has the same content as
when it was first published. JCSE has a carefully defined approach
that allows comments to be added to a paper without any loss of
consistency of the record of the paper and the subsequent comments,
but unless we are to retain all revisions of a paper (which would
not be entirely fair to authors, and would only tend to confuse
readers) this requires that formal comments can only be attached to
papers that are fixed. Hence we do not allow comments on papers
until they have been refereed, and the large majority of readers who
have responded to my previous message (both to me and to the list)
agreee with this approach. Conversely, CORROS-L has the normal
qualities of a mailing list, in that it is essentially ephemeral,
although it is archived for future reference. It is therefore
appropriate for transient discussion of preprint versions of papers,
as I have suggested. Dr Wessling's proposal does not add anything to
the existing availability of CORROS-L, and only tends to confuse the
situation for for anyone trying to follow the discussion now and in
the future (through the support of ICC, we are committed to ensure
that both JCSE and the CORROS-L archives are available
indefinitely).

For these reasons, I would also urge readers who wish to do so to
discuss this paper through this list, rather than by placing their
comments directly on Dr Wessling's site. This way they can ensure
that the discussion is properly accessible to future readers.
